Seoul, South Korea CNN —North Korea claims it tested a new nuclear weapons command-and-control system Monday, with the firing of projectiles carrying simulated nuclear warheads from multiple rocket launcher units. North Korea has tested both the rocket launcher system and a simulated nuclear counterstrike before, according to analysts, but KCNA said Monday’s exercise was the first time the “Haekbangashoe” – or nuclear trigger – command-and-control system was used, demonstrating what it claimed was an ability to switch rocket launchers from conventional to nuclear weapons. Though the regime’s true capabilities have not been independently verified, a 2017 report from the US Defense Intelligence Agency concluded North Korea had likely achieved its key goal of miniaturization. Images supplied by North Korea Monday showed four rockets being launched, with KCNA saying they hit targets on an island 352 kilometers (218 miles) away. The US-South Korea exercise has “incited extreme war fever” and cannot be classified as defense or deterrence, the KCNA report said.

The “Grey's Anatomy” star and race car driver takes the mantle from “Captain America” star Chris Evans, who was 2022's selection. "I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” Dempsey, 57, told the magazine about his initial reaction. Dempsey achieved heartthrob status as Dr. Derek Shepherd — nicknamed “McDreamy” — on “Grey's Anatomy,” appearing in more than 250 episodes. Other Sexiest Man Alive recipients include Michael B. CNN —People magazine has named actor Patrick Dempsey this year’s Sexiest Man Alive. Dempsey was revealed to be the new Sexiest Man Alive on Tuesday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after audience members asked Dempsey, whose voice and face were concealed, questions to help narrow down his identity. “I’m just happy they made a decision and that it was me this year,” Dempsey told Kimmel. Dempsey takes on the title from Chris Evans, who was crowned the 2022 Sexiest Man Alive. When Kimmel asked Dempsey on Tuesday if Evans had called him yet to “concede,” Dempsey said they’ve yet to speak.

Some experts say North Korea would eventually use an expanded arsenal to seek sanctions relief and other concessions from the United States. “Unlike liquid propellant missiles, solid propellant missiles are fueled at the time of manufacture and can thus be released far more quickly in a war, all else being equal,” Panda said. North Korea already has a growing arsenal of short-range, solid-fueled ballistic missiles targeting key locations in South Korea, including U.S. military bases there. “Testing a gimbaled nozzle could therefore represent an important technological waypoint toward North Korea’s stated goal of a solid motor ICBM,” Dempsey said. If North Korea uses the technology to build an ICBM-class missile that can be fired from a submarine, that would equip the North with a threatening secondary, retaliatory attack capability against the United States, he said.
